A Morning Well Spent

It seems this is quite the weekend of celebrations for both Canadians and Americans!  This year our respective countries both enjoy our national holiday on the same weekend.  Click on the pictures in this post for a bigger, better view.

We had a lovely morning yesterday in the next city with thousands of others all taking in the Canada Day parade.  So much red and white everywhere you look.  Fabulous!

In Canada, especially Western Canada, a parade is just not a parade without the RCMP in full uniform to start things off with flaming red bang!  Shining boots, clicking spurs and heels, crisp seams, shining gold, and a brim just so to top it all off.  Truly Canadian!

One of my favourite things about parades in the west is all the horses.  There were several groups of horses in the parade yesterday which only gets me even more excited for the Stampede Parade next Friday where there will be over 700 horses!  All the rodeo queens and princesses are on horses and many of the organizations and trail riding groups are too.

And, just for laughs, this was one of my favourite floats.  There is a huge greenhouse and landscaping supply facility down the highway and this was their creation.  The man was hilarious calling out, "Hard day on the job!"  I figure he had the best spot in the whole parade since he could lounge the whole morning away!

I hope all the Canadian and Americans get to celebrate their nation in style this year!  Enjoy the long weekend!

Lovely pictures Heather!!! I love the horses too! I used to do Pony Club when I was a kid so have always loved them in their shiny tack! My uncle lived in Canada for a few years, many years ago (in Calgary) and spoke of going to the Stampede, loved the photos he shared of that event!!!!

Horses and parades go together like peanut butter and jelly, or like quilters and chocolate.
Thanks for the great photos of how you spent your morning at the parade.
Enjoy your holiday weekend to the fullest.

Hi Heather,

As a faithful reader of your blog and the Miscellaneous Horse Section Coordinator of the Calgary Stampede Parade, I hope we don't disappoint you on Friday. Thank you for saying that Horses are a big part of the Parade it makes me feel better about what I volunteer for. I realize some people do appreciate all our hard work.
