Late in the Fall last year I learned to crochet by watching a video on YouTube. I think it's safe to say that my skill level is about the same as it was then and I can still only make that block. Thankfully, I have figured out a little bit of the "crochet code" and can read simple patterns - and I DO mean simple!
I've made a chunk of progress on my newest crochet project - a giant afghan-type blanket. The pattern is from Lucy at Attic24; a wonderfully creative and colourful blog, well worth the visit! Her colourful prototype was made with 17 colours of DK weight yarn switching colours at the end of every returned row. For me, that was a little ambitious and I stuck with two colours swapping between the two of them to create my stripes.
The yarn is Red Heart white and variegated in "Monet". I have loved the colours in the variegated yarn I chose for many years, but I couldn't ever think of anything worthwhile to make with it. When I figured out that the double-crochet stitch during my YouTube session, it became apparent that it was a useful and popular stitch for this type of blanket. Hooray! Something I can use the pretty, spring-garden-like yarn for!
I have put it in its project bag over the past month and am wondering why I haven't gotten it out in the evenings when we sit in peace and enjoy at program on TV or listen to the radio... Silly me! Guess what I'll be doing tonight!?

I love the colors you are using. Monet is one of my favorite that I've used for hats and mittens. I taught myself to crochet from the Old Green Lean How book back in the forties--yes, I am that old.

Good to see your progress in the crochet journey, well done!! It's great to be able to make something that will be useful, I love variegated wool too!!!
It's good to see you're finding it enjoyable to crochet. Both crochet and knitting are ideal in-front-of-the-TV pass times, especially when you get good enough to do it without watching your hands! I haven't accomplished that, though I haven't crocheted or knitted for about 30 years. I'd like to take it up again, but am fearful that finishing my 18 quilting UFOs, would fall by the wayside. I'm determine to finish many of them this year. Thanks for sharing your pretty project.
What a beautiful afghan - its going to be lovely when its finished. I totally want to learn to crochet so I'm not trying to listen to a tv show over the sound of my sewing machine sometimes. It would be nice to have a nice 'couch' hobby and one that doesn't require the use of an entire room with all the supplies that sewing can take up.
