I have been preparing for the Christmas holidays and the gifts I will be making for the season. I have been appliqueing (by hand) the orange peel shapes for Kathleen Tracy's Orange Peel quilt pattern from her book Remembering Adelia for several months... A little here, another there, waiting at the doctor, waiting for MissV's dance class to finish, watching a movie or America's Got Talent... You get the idea.
Previously I showed you my pile of the orange peels. They don't look like much when you see them all a-muck and in a disorganized pile of squares. Thankfully I was in no hurry to complete them and have been working on them for many months now, so a crazy pile of scraps is a common look for the beginnings of this quilt!
So now, voila! The top is done! I think I know how it will be quilted too! I was going to do a tight stipple in the background spaces behind/between the peels, but have since changed my mind and will do some sort of echo and hatching.
I think my favourite part about this project was the day I found the border fabric that is the exact same as the fabric pictured in the book! The only difference was that the book shows the blue version of the print and I found the green version. Either way it was perfect!
I also added some tiny detail in the corner blocks - toile! I was looking for something else in a pile of reproduction fabric and found it all nicely folded near the bottom. I fussy cut four scenes from the toile and used them as the corner blocks for the outer border of the quilt - I love how they look and it turned out fabulously!
I already know who I will be giving this project to, and I don't think the person is regular reader. But just in case, I am not going to mention any names or locations. :o) I'll narrow it down to somewhere in Canada or the USA. Merry Christmas!

It's gorgeous! What a wonderful gift it will make.
The toile in the corners is a nice touch. Lucky recipient!
Looking good Heather!! Very nice job on the hand applique!!
Heather it looks great. I love your idea of the little scenes in the corner. I'm looking forward to seeing it all quilted. I can't quite picture where you would stipple and where you would cross hatch. I live in the US ... by chance is it for ME?
Oh your orange peel blocks are wonderful! And your right - that border fabric makes it!
I sure do love that quilt! I think that book needs to go on my wish list, I've seen the quilts in it and they are so precious! I heard that border fabric is hard to find~good for you! A lovely finish, it will make a fantastic gift!
That is just gorgeous. Someone is going to be very lucky.
Your quilt turned out great. I love it when I find at least one piece of the fabric that is in the pattern picture. It is so much fun.
It's very nicely done. What a good use for a bit of toile. I'm happy for you to have a near-finish. It feels good, doesn't it?

What luck to find that fabric. I happened upon it in the last several months but immediately forgot where I saw. Duhhhh! The colors you used are soothing. Love them.
